Having fun is one of my core values. For me, having fun equates with happiness, joy and living life to the fullest.
Earlier this year I got the idea to write a list of fun things to do from a friend (who passed on this article here). The idea is to write a list of fun things to do based on the age you’re turning. For me this meant writing a list of 31 fun things to do in my 31st year 🙂
You might want to do it too, it is not a bucket list or an attempt to do resolutions, it is simply a list of activities that you find fun.
Get out a pen and paper and note, without much thought, a list of fun things to do. Some items on your list you might do once in a year, and others you might do every day. There is no right or wrong – just whatever comes to mind, write them down.
I have decided to share my list that I have been posting daily on my Instagram page @whisperingsofthemind for the last 31 days. I am sharing it exactly as I posted it, word for word, because I feel like as the days wore on I started getting more and more into it and explaining why each thing was important to me and how I was going to do it. It felt like a bit of a journey, and here it is:

This year NUMBER 16 on my list of 31 things to do in my 31st year is not to cuddle or hug, but to nurture myself and those around me. As a child there was a slogan ‘have you hugged your kids today?’ And I remember my mum always used to say it as she hugged me. For those of us who write, reading is equally as important. I write a lot about fear and ways of overcoming this. Recently I made a decision to trust my intuition and embark on doing what I have wanted to do in a long time and that is to bring my creative side and my academic side along with each other. This has meant stepping outside my comfort zone and taking a risk. I love writing, working with others, facilitating, creativity, and working with incarcerated people and I am DETERMINED to incorporate all of these things. Watch this space 🙂 NUMBER 29 on my list of 31 fun things to do in my 31st year – Enjoy my work and move forward!
It has been my dream for about 5 years to conduct music/creative programs in prisons. A couple of months ago I spoke to Evan Rhys Davies – the man who wrote the program that became ‘Songs from the Inside’ an amazing show on TVNZ where a group of musicians work with prisoners to develop and record songs. It was such an inspiring conversation and has spurred me on to make this dream into a reality. NUMBER 30 on my list of 31 fun things to do in my 31st year was to get involved in a music/art program in prisons … I can feel it happening and it is going to be a program of my making 🙂
For a very long time I found it extremely difficult to be kind and loving to myself. I gave myself a hard time every chance I got and didn’t particularly like the person I was. But in the last four years I have come to love the woman I am and to treat myself with love and respect. This year especially I have made an effort to practice self-compassion and as a result I feel happy with where I am, and who I am. NUMBER 31 on my list of 31 fun things to do in my 31st year was to make a friend. Well I had intended it to be another human, but now I’ve decided that that friend is me 🙂 So, we have made it to the end. I have loved doing my daily updates on fun things to do in my life, so maybe I’ll continue … and it can become a list of 365 things, am I up for the challenge??
